What is Haiku?

  • Haiku is a traditional Japanese form of poetry.
  • Haiku is typically 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.
  • Japanese rules for how to write Haiku are clear and their Haiku usually includes a seasonal element.
  • In foreign languages there exists NO consensus on how to write Haiku but typically the metre stays the same.
  • Haiku can describe almost anything, but you seldom find themes which are too complicated for normal people's recognition and understanding.
  • Haiku uses the technique of cutting: the cutting divides the Haiku into two parts independent of each other. Both sections must enrich the understanding of the other.

Curlz MT san serif font

  • I chose this font because it has curls and lends itself to a fun, light-hearted design of which my haiku is about. Also the some of the letter curls look like little hearts. A sans serif font is one that does not have the small features called "serif" at the end of strokes. In print, sans-serif fonts are more typically used for headlines than for body text.
  • Font supports haiku subject.
  • The font does not detract from readability.
  • Font no anti-alias ( anti-aliasing is a system whereby the edges of letters use shades between the color of the type and the color of the background. There is not need because the text is black on white).
  • I chose black text on white background as it makes the font stand out and 7 out of 10 people prefer black text on white background. When used the audience has improved comprehension.
  • The line length if less than 12 words which makes it easy to read.
  • The text has been kept unjustified and aligned to the left as this is preferred for reading.
  • Letters are consistently spaced within a word.
  • The appropriate word spacing and internal letter spacing that Hartley (1986) indicates is approximately 25% of the type size.
  • Lower case typestyle is chosen for ease of reading.
  • Size 24px font keeps the clarity of the font when compressed. This font would have limitations at smaller pixels as there is loss of clarity in some of the letters, especially the "a".
  • No underlining is used as this confuses the reader with hypertext.
