Module 3
Activity 3.9a: "I am OK"
After importing the "Am I OK" WAV file into Wavepad, I zoomed in on the file to choose the most appropriate place to cut and paste the segment of file so that it became "I am OK". Then I cropped it to eliminate any sound that was not needed at the end of the file. I exported the file To achieve a file size similar to the original, I selected 22050 Khz, 8 bits and mono when exporting the audio.
File size: 46.7kb
File format: wav
Activity 3.9b: Haiku Reading
I used Wavepad to record the Haiku reading. I repeated the reading at least 8 times until I was happy with my articulation. I wanted some humour in my voice that matches Ferguson's character. I finally cut and pasted sections from a few different readings to get the right effect.
I had been using Audacity and creating podcasts with my students last term. I had accumulated copyright free audio tracks to use for their productions. One of these tracks called "Under African Skies" sounded very happy and playful and reminded me of Ferguson bounding around and having fun. I wanted the music and my voice to add to the overall effect and give the user a greater understanding of my lovely dog. I feel that my voice has emotional quality that expresses how I feel about Ferguson and combines well with the music that reflects his loving personality.
I trimmed sections of the track and mixed them with my reading. I faded the track out and cropped the end of the file to eliminate audio that wasn't required. I exported as a wav file 22050khz, 8 bits and mono.
File size: 382.kb
File format: wav
Skills gained
I had been working with Audacity with my primary school students last term so recording, editing and mixing were quite common to me. This is the first time I have used Wavepad. I like the export abilities of Wavepad over Audacity. During this exercise I further developed the following skills:
- I have a better understanding of different audio file formats, size and quality of the final product.
- I have a greater appreciation of how quickly audio files add to the size of the finished product.
- I recognise that not all computer browsers have the same players to read audio file formats and there is a need to provide links to players in the event that the user's browser is unable to play the file. I have been using quicktime files so have provided a link to the quicktime player.
- I have recognised the need for the media controller to have controls so the user can turn "off/on" files when required.
- I have continued to use the embed tag inside the object tag when coding webpages for audio media controllers. This is the most accessible solution and has cross browser support.
- Bookmarked websites that provide copyright free music suitable for use on the web.
- Experimented with Harmony Assistant software. I have ordered a Korg Nanokey computer midi keyboard. This will allow me to create my own musical scores.
- Improved my use of the tools provided in a number of audio editing software programs and became more aware of the effects provided.
